Advertising agency to help promote Zapata in unique way

Ambitious proposal to commemorate 60 years since
Falcon Lake flooding

(Excerpt from Zapata County News report on Commissioners Court meeting, Tuesday Oct. 11, 2011) [Jose Garcia, with Graphitiks Advertising of Laredo brought a presentation to approve a proclamation to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the relocation of several Zapata County communities, in 2013. Over 3,000 residents were affected when Falcon Lake rose to capacity earlier than expected due to heavy rains. Many left their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. Garcia explained how a proposed 3-day event could bring positive attention to Zapata and become a grand-scale reunion of sorts. This would encompass the entire communities of Zapata County, bringing families back to their roots and educating youth about their history. Stories and memories would serve to revive the reputation of the communities.

Many organizations from Zapata, Laredo and other counties would be involved.  The Commissioners agreed to consider this in more detail at the next Court meeting in November.]

Zapata unveils memorial

Zapata unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial July 4th Weekend

"Fallen Heroes Memorial" monument concept by Graphitiks Advertising Design for ZECO, Zapata, Texas.

A large crowd was on hand at Flores Park for the unveiling of the Fallen Heroes Monument. Robert Montes served as Master of Ceremonies, announcing the planned events for the day celebrating 235 years as a nation.

Commissioner Jose Vela offered a prayer of thanks. The flag raising ceremony officially opened the day, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Border Patrol Agent Luis Calderon.

Commissioner Vela welcomed all in attendance to this event honoring the World War II veterans and the unveiling of the commemorative plaque honoring all of our heroes. The plaque was designed by Graphitiks Advertising Design, Inc. out of Laredo, Texas.

Zapata County Judge Joe Rathmell announced some of the improvements in the Zapata area, including the new Historical Museum that will be operated by volunteers. He thanked Commissioner Jose Vela for his work in transforming Flores Park from simple park to the space of beauty that it is now. Our World War II veterans exemplify the best and they are deserving of the beautiful marker in this attractive and accessible location.

Veterans on hand to view the unveiling included Trinidad Cuellar, Ramon Gonzalez, Antonio Morales, Anselmo Trevino, Sr., Antonio Trevino, Leopoldo Trevino, Hector Lopez, Sr., Adan Perez, Domingo Sanchez, Rodolfo Sanchez, Stanley  Janowski and Mueller.
